Athlete Spotlight: Rob Pizem

Our athlete spotlight today is about a man that we like to call "The Trad Master." Rob Pizem will be attending the Idaho Mountain Festival with his family. He as graciously volunteered to conduct a trad climbing clinic and an awesome slideshow presentation. More info about those attractions coming soon.

Rob Pizem was born in a small town in Northeastern Ohio. Having played most sports throughout his childhood, he settled on golf and ice hockey and spent 20 years playing each competitively. Upon entering college, he was introduced to rock climbing and the rest is as they say, “history.” Years of obsessing over gear and routes, calling his car home, and existing in a perpetual cycle of training programs, has been the reason for his success.

Rob has been recognized mostly for his antics on the sandstone cracks and towers in Utah, but also on granite big walls in Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Norway. He has freed and/or established big wall routes like Thunderbird, the Dunn Route, Moonlight Buttress, Touchstone, Freeloader, Silverback (all in Zion National Park), Arcturus, The Regular Route (Yosemite National Park), and many others. In addition, he has established challenging single pitch granite and sandstone cracks like Back to the Earth, Rocky Mountain High (Mt. Evans), Army of Darkness (Canyonlands National Park) and The Unaweeper (Unaweep Canyon).

Rock climbing, traveling, and new routing have been a priority for Rob over the last 18 years, but he has also excelled as a geological engineer, a high school science teacher, a husband and more recently, a father. Currently, he enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife, playing and hiking with his son and new routing in and around Grand Junction, Colorado.

Rob’s personality is infectious and his love of helping others contagious, which is why he has been sponsored by such incredible companies like Arcteryx, SCARPA, CAMP-USA, Sterling Ropes and Wind X-treme. He is also an ambassador for the American Alpine Club, a board member of the Western Colorado Climbers Coalition and an athletic trainer for other passionate climbers.

Keep an eye out and do not miss his insightful climbing instruction or entertaining and beautifully documented slide shows throughout the United States and Canada [especially at the Idaho Mountain Festival]. Feel free to keep up with his climbing life on his blog: pizem.blogspot.com.
